DIY Boutonnieres: why they can only be worn in dry weather)

After looking and looking on the boutonnieres, I thought the colours should be different. I'll have a white bouquet, and my bridesmaids' bouquets will be yellow-orangey. Wade's boutonniere should be white, and the groomsmen's should be yellow-orangey.

So I bought acrylic paint and made 5 of the mini calla lily boutonnieres into mango calla lilies. They're gorgeous: I have a bit of red on the tips, blended into orange then into yellow. they are based on the following picture:

Then I realized the paint is water soluble. So if it rains, the calla lily boutonnieres' colour will run onto the tuxedos!

Now what do you think I should do? Rinse the calla lilies to try to remove the paint? Leave the paint as-is, and hope it doesn't rain? (Though I think that'll guarantee it will rain.) Do you know of any sealant or spray that will reduce / prevent running of the paint?

If you wander the paint section you can find a good sealent. I use an acrylic spray that holds well and makes things glossy but there are also mat options as well.

And actually they aren't as water soluble as it claims at least on fabric. I've painted shirts and what not with acrylic and it doesn't wash off in the laundry.

I'm not sure if this is a sure bet, but have you read to see what shellack would do?

I love them! I love all your DIY projects. It is inspiring me to think more about how I can get creative. Sorry I don't have any advice about the paint, but it seems like others do! :)

I wouldn't worry about it. I can't imagine that even if it is pouring out that they would get wet enough for the colors to bleed. I think you will be fine! They look great and I like that you painted to match.

Shows you how crafty I am...I was going to suggest the weatherproofing spray you use on shoes....but I think blablover 5's idea is much better. ;)

@Bella: I may have to look for some shellack
@melissa: good to know. I'll still look for a sealant, as my added "insurance", but at least I know I won't have to be perfect.
@pm: I'd have thought waterproofing spray was a great suggestion. I still do - if I don't have any luck with the sealant / shellack, that's what I'll try next!

Hm. You might want to do a test case (rinse in water to see what happens). Sorry, I'm not so crafty!

However, they look great. Take a pic when you get a chance!

I know that with the spray I use I have accidentally spilled water onto my acrylic paintings after they've been glossed over and I can wipe it off just fine with no smudges.
